This study examines the interpersonal relationship between men and women and how men think about masculinity and famininity. This is otherwise referred to as gender-role schema which presupposes how a man internalizes masculine gender-role identity that eventually defines his perception of gender-role attributes and identities. Employing a qualitative approach, the study investigates the role ascribed to men through the process of socialization that creates in them different forms of emasculation. Using two plays by both African and Afro-American playwrights, the study attempts a comparative analysis of gender-role schema, masculine mystique and gender-role conflict that engender emasculation in the two cultural environments. A combination of psycho-analysis and Bem's Schema Theory of Masculinity are used as tools of analysis to reveal the fact that gender-role conflicts arising from the scheme a man is socialized create fear of emasculation and predisposition to violence. The study, therefore, suggests that rigidity to traditional gender disparities should be de-emphasized and an attempt should be made to train girls the way boys are socialized especially in a patriarchal social setting. It was concluded that only a reappraisal of the numerous assumptions, expectations and attitudes about what manhood means can dispel the fear of emasculation and other unconcious dynamics in men.
